Laurinburg Exchange - July 15, 2010
A group of farmers from the 8th District have formed a group called Another Farmer for Kissell to support U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell in his re-election campaign for Congress.

"The people that work the land have to overcome adverse weather conditions and fluctuating markets, and Larry Kissell understands these concerns and does a great job" said Allen McLaurin, a Scotland County farmer and chairman of Another Farmer for Kissell.

Locust City Council was joined Saturday by Congressman Larry Kissell and USDA Rural Develop-ment State Director Randall Gore for a groundbreaking ceremony for the Locust Government Center. Also joining them were project architect Allan McGuire with McGuire Architecture and Planning, contractor Michael Miles with Miles Builders, Inc., and project engineers, McGill and Associates.

“It was a great day,” Mayor Scott Efird said.

“I couldn’t have asked for a better day; with all the people that came out and the good weather, everything was excellent.”

Congressman Larry Kissell (NC-08) organized a meeting between representatives from the U.S. Army Surgeon General’s office and the North Carolina Research Campus.

The meeting took place June 30. Although Kissell facilitated the meeting, he was unable to attend due to the schedule of votes in Washington.

“It was imperative those entrusted with the nutrition and health of the men and women serving in the U.S. Army see first-hand the groundbreaking research being done at the North Carolina Research Campus,” Kissell said.

Tuesday, Congressman Larry Kissell (NC-08) showed his continued support for cybersecurity by voting to recognize the importance of the National Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition, and its five-year effort to promote cybersecurity curriculum in institutions of higher learning. The resolution passed with bipartisan support.

Three congressmen from the Cape Fear region brought the U.S. House Agriculture Committee to Fayetteville on Monday to hear from constituents with wish lists for a 2012 farm bill.

The wishes ranged from increasing broadband access in rural communities to heading off a peanut ban on airline flights.

More than 100 people - mostly farmers and ranchers - attended the hearing at the Crown Expo Center.

A Scotland County grower says the 2012 Farm Bill should look a lot like the one passed in 2008 — it should provide a safety net for farmers without regard to farm size or structure.

Laurinburg's Allen McLaurin testified this week before the U.S. House Agriculture Committee in Fayetteville. McLaurin is a cotton farmer and farm manager for ZV Pate, Inc.

McLaurin said an effective farm policy should adhere to several principals:

— It should be market-oriented with a goal of promoting quality, efficiency and domestic competition;

CONCORD – Congressman Larry Kissell (NC-08) announced Wednesday that the Star Housing Authority Troy Housing Authority and Mt. Gilead Housing Authority will receive grants under the Department of Housing and Urban Development’s Capitol Funds program. The program annually provides funds to Public Housing Agencies for capital and management activities, including modernization and development of public housing.

Congressman Larry Kissell (NC-08) announced North Carolina will receive $3,142,366 in grant money through the Department of Labor’s On-The-Job Training National Emergency Grants.

This funding, which is part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, will help North Carolina with the resources to get people back to work by creating training and job opportunities.

“It is important to get our people back to work,” Kissell said.

On Monday, Congressman Larry Kissell hosted a reception honoring students from the 8th District who received appointments to one of five U.S. Service Academies. The reception was at the Cole Auditorium and Community Center on the campus of Richmond Community College.

Andrew Pribble of Richfield received an appointment to the U.S. Military Academy. Pribble, son of James and Janet Pribble, attended Gray Stone Day School last year. He was unable to attend the reception.
