Glow-in-the-dark strips on display Tuesday at the Defense and Economic Development Trade Show looked familiar to a group of soldiers who stopped to inspect them.

They'd last seen that photoluminescent technology on their armored vehicles that traversed dark deserts during a recent deployment.

"How did you like it?" Richard Martin, president and CEO of Defense Holding Solutions Inc., asked the soldiers, who nodded enthusiastically.

One of my fondest and proudest memories growing up in rural Biscoe was hearing my father, a veteran of the Second World War, talk about his service to our country and the sacrifices and risks demanded of him and his fellow soldiers. In World War II, the entire country went to war, and those at home shared in the national effort on a daily basis: rationing, buying war bonds, producing the planes and other supplies the fighting forces needed. They were all part of America’s commitment to defend freedom across the globe.

The Union County Sheriff’s Office will be getting some new equipment in the days to come, thanks to a new federal grant. Congressional Rep. Larry Kissell’s office announced the decision Aug. 5, with $52,729 given to the UCSO from the Department of Justices Edward Byrne Justice Assistance Grant Program.

Members of the Monroe Police and Fire departments, the Union County Sheriff’s Office, Union County EMS and many others participated.

CONCORD — The Lymphedema Diagnosis and Treatment Cost Saving Act of 2010, introduced by U.S. Rep. Larry Kissell, has been endorsed by several national cancer organizations.

According to a Kissell press release, H.R. 4662 is designed to require Medicare to offer fair treatment coverage for Americans suffering from primary and secondary lymphedema.
